Constantin and Ornement for Marion Stora

Sep 2024

For two creations by interior designer Marion Stora, Passementerie Verrier developed bespoke works drawing on distinctly different techniques. Cords and wrapped gimps adorn the Constantin valet stand, while a satin braid stretched taut across the frame of the Ornement screen holds 62 unique pieces of fine goldsmith enamel in place.

Constantin

On the Constantin valet stand, the pants bar, hanger, and tray are covered in cords and gimps crafted specifically to follow their contours. The atelier worked with several types of cord—plain or twisted, including two-ply asymmetrical strands—as well as cords of varying thicknesses. They are made from multicolored viscose yarns that blend to produce their own nuanced shades. Applied to the different elements of the valet, these trimmings layer their tactile relief over that of the gouged wood. The interplay of thickness, twist, and color harmonizes the two materials while preserving the individual character of each.

Ornement

For the Ornement folding screen, Marion Stora envisioned five patinated brass panels framing 62 unique pieces of fine goldsmith enamel crafted by Anne de La Forge. Passementerie Verrier chose to weave a dense satin braid capable of supporting the high tension required across the frame. Its lustrous surface also offers a vibrant play of light and color that echoes the depths of the enamels.

The braids are mounted and tensioned across the frame, securing the enamel pieces in place according to Marion Stora’s precise composition. Their elasticity is an integral part of the design: tension must be calibrated with absolute precision to achieve the exact height and preserve the alignment of every single element.

Assembly requires extensive testing and meticulous adjustment, followed by invisible hand-finishing so the functional stitching remains completely imperceptible.

Constantin and Ornement showcase two very different expressions of passementerie in contemporary object design: through tactile relief and layered color on the valet stand, and through structural tension and luminous sheen on the screen.
